Our History

Amen Scientific Herbal & Alternative Medical Hospital was founded in 1996 by Sheikh Dr. Amin Mohammed Osei Bonsu, a visionary healer and scholar who inherited a rich legacy of traditional medicine from his father, Mohammed Osei Bonsu (Nana Bonsu). What began as a modest clinic in Edwinase, Kumasi, has grown into one of Ghana’s most recognized institutions for herbal and alternative medicine.

From Edwinase, the hospital expanded to Atwima-Techiman, Bibiani, Dome (Accra), and today operates multiple branches across Ghana, including Accra, Kumasi, Takoradi, Ho, Nkawkaw, Sunyani, Tamale, Bolgatanga, Nkwanta, Atebubu, and Enchi.

Over the decades, Amen Hospital has become a leader in treating chronic and complex conditions such as stroke, infertility, prostate disorders, kidney disease, liver disease, neuropathy, and malaria, using FDA-approved herbal medicines like Amen Fevermix — listed on Ghana’s Essential Herbal Medicines List since 2008.

We are also pioneers in education and research, becoming the first institution to host interns from the KNUST School of Herbal Medicine, and later expanding to welcome international students from the United States, China, and Europe. In 2023, the hospital established the Amen College of Health Sciences, training future professionals in nursing, midwifery, and complementary healthcare.

Our Leadership

At the heart of Amen Hospital’s success is Sheikh Dr. Amin Bonsu — a physician, Islamic scholar, entrepreneur, and philanthropist. Born in 1959 in Ghana, he pursued training in Osteopathy, Naturopathy, and Homeopathy at the Anglo-American Institute of Drugless Therapy (UK), followed by advanced studies in law, economics, Islamic scholarship, and alternative medicine across the UK, Libya, Japan, and India.

He currently serves as:

  • National Chairman of the Ghana Muslim Mission (GMM), under which more than 166 schools have been established nationwide.
  • Founder of the Amen College of Health Sciences.
  • Executive Member of the National Mosque Foundation.
  • Vice Chairman of the Islamic Education Council.
